How can we make the best use of a divine person?
Question: Swamiji said that he was wondering whether we would make good use of him
or not when he comes out. Now Swamiji is here for one week; how can we
make the best use of him during this time?
Swamiji: "First you should think patiently. I can’t keep this body for 100
years. I have a certain time here and once I will have to go in samadhi.
Even though I go in samadhi, I will continue to solve your problems. This
is what I have already told you.
Consider Jesus Christ, who came to this world about 2,000 years ago. At
that time, not everyone understood Jesus Christ's divine powers. Only very
few individuals understood them. With Jesus Christ there, the whole world
would have been involved in spirituality. They accused him so that he couldn't
teach. They put him in jail, crucified him and killed him. Only a very
few people at that time understood about him. You all know the bible, so
I don't have to tell you more about this. The worldly people didn't understand
Jesus Christ completely, they didn't realize his divine powers and didn't
understand his teachings. They didn't follow his teachings and finally
they only killed him. Ordinary people did this to him.
Some of those ordinary people acted as if they were involved in spirituality.
Those are the people who did this. These were people who were also in spirituality,
but they thought that it would be a dishonour for them to respect others
or other great avatars or saints who are on the spiritual path. They thought
if everyone starts to respect and follow Jesus Christ, then they would
not pay them any respect or honour anymore. These are people who cover
themselves with a blanket called spirituality but they are not really spiritual
people. These are the people who wanted name and fame in the Kingdom and
wanted the kings to only have faith in them.
Similarly Gautama Buddha lived around 2,500 years ago. He also faced the
same problems. He was a king, a Brahmin king, a Hindu. Yet, he was fed
up of the Hindu religion because the kings of those times and even his
own father didn't want him to go on the Hindu spiritual path.
The kings in those days used to go and meet great saintly people to get
a boon from them. They would ask, "My son wants to become a sannyasin
in the Hindu religion. He is my only son. If he goes on this path, there
won’t be anyone to rule my country. So please make my son rule this country,
leading a married life, doing good dharma and charity for our people."
The saints used to say, "We bless your son and we will make him do
this if he comes to meet us and gets our blessings."
This is what happened to Lord Buddha. They told him that he has to go and
meet a great saint who can materialize things and who can see his future.
They said, "If he says you should go on the spiritual path, then you
can do so. If he says you should rule the country then you have to do that
because he has all the divine powers and he can do anything. He is such
a great saint that, when you receive his darshan, even your room will be
filled with that divinity." So Buddha immediately went by horse-driven
chariot to meet that saint. He thought, "I want to become a sannyasin!"
However, that saint said that he should not become a sannyasin and said
that he is the person who should rule the country. Hearing this, Buddha
replied that he is the one who should live in the forest! After giving
this reply, he went directly to the forest and started to meditate for
seven years continuously.
In the forest, he saw many skeletons of those who had meditated under the
trees. He thought, "Even if I die, it is okay for me. I want to see
enlightenment, I have to attain enlightenment." He was determined
in that. Before going to sit there in meditation he said, "If You
Yourself, God, bring food to the place where I am, then I will eat. Otherwise
I won’t eat anything." He meditated and became thinner and thinner.
When he was at the very edge of death, food came to him by itself. He ate
the food and reached enlightenment. After that he started teaching the
Buddha Sanatana Dharma.
Buddha didn’t have any ego. He didn't have any jealousy. He never gossiped.
He didn't have any bad qualities. A person who was born as a king meditated
in the forest for seven years, attained the highest state and was teaching
spirituality to this world.
At the time he was doing this, language, religion and caste were all firmly
established in this country. This spiritual Buddha didn't differentiate
between people on the basis of caste, religion or language. Nearly one
thousand people received robes from Buddha. What he taught them was not
to talk gossip and to always be thinking of God.
During the time when he was teaching, there were many princes - around
500 - who took robes from Buddha. They were all Brahmins. The sons of low
caste kings also received robes from Buddha. He was a person who didn't
discriminate on the basis of caste or religion, so he gave robes to all.
2,500 years ago they were all eating together at the same place. The higher
caste people and the lower caste people were all mixed, sitting together
and eating. The high cast kings came to see this and when they saw that
Buddha was making the people of all castes eat together they decided Buddha
was not acting correctly. They thought it was a waste of their high caste
if they were going to be mixed with the other castes. The sons didn’t listen
to their fathers. They were all on the path to enlightenment that Buddha
was showing them. They placed Buddha under house arrest.
The first conference of Buddha was taking place and they kept Buddha under
house arrest. Then they released him. They instructed to put poison in
the food he was going to eat. They mixed the poison in the food.
Buddha ate it and died. Why did they kill him?
He wanted to make the world realize that spirituality doesn’t see caste,
religion or even language.
I can tell you many stories like this about great saints, avatars and spiritual
souls. All these stories are one hundred percent true.
What is happening here? The Dharma they are teaching becomes poison to
them, but they do not care about that. The reason for this happening is
that humans are not acting as human beings.
You have all come from foreign countries. If I tell you that you should
not take drugs, you should not drink alcohol, you should all slowly become
vegetarian, some of you will accept this good advice and some of you won't.
Let me give you an example. I started building this Ashram in 1983, so
in 2008 it will have been 25 years ago. You saw that moments ago a boy
came, fell at my feet and worshipped me. Because of this boy I am in prison
today. He had a love affair with a girl. That girl's mother came to me
and told me I should not let her daughter have a love affair with him because
he is of a low caste and they are of a high caste. I called that girl and
asked her why she is doing something that her mother doesn't like. I advised
her lovingly; that is all I did.
That girl left the Ashram, she joined a women's group here and she laid
down a complaint that Swamiji had raped her six years earlier. There was
no evidence because she told that it had happened six years earlier. I
have never even touched her. These are all orphanage children.
I wanted to raise orphanage children, but they were doing harm to me. For
me that was not a reason to stop bringing up these children. Those who
testified against me are in the Ashram now.
I am not angry with them, I have a lot of love for them. Everyone scolded me and asked me whether I have any brain, because the
children came back to me and with their help I am running this Ashram.
Everyone was asking me why I was doing this.
I think that human beings are persons who are not mature.
If you touch a scorpion it will sting you. There is a fire and the scorpion
is moving towards that fire. I am a charity-minded person and a person
who doesn't want harm to come to anyone, so should I let the scorpion die
in the fire or should I save that scorpion? I should save that scorpion.
I am going to save that scorpion even though it will sting me. When it
stings, I have that pain but it doesn't matter. I am always doing good.
I will save that scorpion again and again. Even if it stings me again I
won’t worry about it. It is my nature to protect and save always. I don't want to find out why it is stinging me and why it is doing harm
to me.
Tomorrow you may scold me. You may even criticize me. I am not a person
who will worry about all this. I am a good person according to my conscience.
I am truthful to God. I ask God whether I am a good person and God says
yes. I am fully satisfied with that. If I ask Lakshmi whether I am a good
person and she says "No, because you are always scolding me, you are
always finding fault with me, you are saying whatever I do is wrong,"
I don't worry about all these things. I don't care even whether Lakshmi
says I am a good person or a bad person. I want to be good to God only.
The question is, to what extent do you want to be good towards me?
You asked how you can make the best use of me during this week. But we
cannot talk about only one week.
The question is how to make the best use of a divine person. Even the questions you ask are wrong. But that doesn't mean I can just
give a wrong reply to you, does it? I have to correct your question and
then I should also give you the correct reply for that.
Why Jesus Christ die? Because of an ordinary person like you, like Lakshmi,
like Martin. It were human beings who killed him. Who killed Buddha? A
human being. You should think that you have not understood their state.
You don't understand their state. Whether it is for one week or ten years,
the reply to this question is that you should understand their state.
Understanding is very important for this. If you don't understand, can
you study? If a child does something wrong, can I be blamed for that? No.
Therefore, you should have that maturity.
It is not correct to think that, since Swamiji is here, if you can sit
beside him you will get the Divine. It is not correct to think like that.
You want to cook for Swamiji. By cooking for him can you attain enlightenment?
By washing his clothes, cleaning his slippers, can you attain enlightenment?
No, you cannot attain enlightenment like that. They said this 2,000 years ago. You are all very well educated. What you
should realize is that understanding is very important. It may be one week
or ten years or even one day - if there is no understanding then there
will always be misunderstanding. What is the meaning of misunderstanding?
If there is understanding then you are going to know about him. If you
misunderstand him then you can’t know about him. That is all. I should
not tell you the reply in a short way. I want to reply to you with stories
so that you can understand very well.
It is not wrong that this girl went away from this Ashram and told these
stories. I don't consider this as a wrong deed. That girl had a love affair
with a man, I stopped that and because of this she got very angry. Is it
her fault? Imagine a girl here has a boyfriend. I will say that if you
want, you can marry him and be with him, but I don't believe that he will
look after you until you die. That is all I can tell. If I were to tell
her, "Don’t marry him!" then if that girl would get angry towards
me, and she goes and tells something about me, then there would happen
another problem.
You are all not yet mature.
I am coming close to you. I am always in a dangerous situation. That is
why I am always telling to you to understand me. I don't have any personal
anger towards you. When the time comes I have to book the flight ticket
- the samadhi ticket. Before that you have to learn something from me.
Why don't you do that? Can you attain enlightenment by learning in seven
days? Buddha attained enlightenment only after seven years. How a great
king he was! He had many comforts and luxuries. You don't have anything
but you put on a show of false acting. All this is a waste of your time.
Come closer to God.
This is a good question and a good reply to it.
(note: In the above text, names such as Lakshmi and Martin are not real
ones which Swamiji said in his satsang, they are replaced with.)
______
---You remain in falsehood without maturing yourself. You cheat yourself.
You say "Spirituality, spirituality!" and put a spiritual blanket
over yourselves. There is no spirituality in your mind, in your heart or
in your thoughts.---(2009 Mahashivaratri)
While one has some desires for worldly things, he should do everything
in the world.
Only after he has found that he can never be satisfied with anything in
the world, he should come and receive teachings from saints.
